Come Visit us in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom

the land of heaven

Come stay with us in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom.

Owen’s Camp takes its name from the Rev Francis Owen, a graduate of St John’s College Cambridge, who, from a camp provided by King Dingane, witnessed the putting to death of Trekker leader Piet Retief and 100 of his followers on the instructions of the King on February 6, 1838.

The Camp lies at the centre of the 23 000 ha eMakhosini-Opathe Heritage Park, a candidate for World Heritage Site status. It is a landscape unique in world terms and is the resting place of seven illustrious Zulu Kings.

Enjoy sweeping views of uMgungundlovu, the partially restored Royal Residence of King Dingane, who on September 24, 1828 assassinated his legendary brother, King Shaka, founder of the Zulu nation, “The people of heaven”, who have left their mark on the world stage.

Bird life is abundant and several species of game, including White Rhino, have been re-introduced to the park to return it to its former glory.

Guests can enjoy guided walks in the park and can, quite literally walk with giraffe.
